YouTube Video "How to Optimize your Windows PC Battery"
Under normal usage, a Windows laptop should typically last between three and six hours on a single charge. But what if your laptop's battery isn't getting the job done?
Worry not, as you can try these five battery optimization tips on your Windows laptop to boost its battery life. You may be able to double your laptop's battery backup after implementing the tips below.
1) Disconnected Unwanted Peripherals
Believe it or not, external peripherals like USB-connected keyboards and mice do consume your laptop's battery. Most Windows users these days use bluetooth mice and keyboards, but there is still a large audience that prefers USB-connected ones.
These peripherals draw power from your laptop's battery to operate, and the consumption increases if you use RGB peripherals.
In essence, connected peripherals consume a significant amount of your laptop's battery. So, if there are any peripherals you don't need, it's better to disconnect them.
2) Give Your Laptop Some Breathing Space
Most of us have a habit of using our laptops while keeping them on our laps. Unfortunately, this isn't a good practice from either a medical or technical perspective. When you place your laptop on your lap, it doesn't get enough space to release the warm air generated by its internal components. As a result, your laptop starts to heat up more quickly.
Exposing yourself to this warm air regularly can affect your reproductive health and cause various skin-related issues. From a technical perspective, when the internals of your laptop heat up, it can impact the laptop's overall performance. You may start experiencing stuttering and lag issues on your device. To deal with these problems, your laptop will begin consuming more battery power, resulting in reduced battery backup.
You can avoid all these symptoms by simply giving your laptop some breathing space. Make sure the laptop's air vents are clean and that nothing is blocking them. Avoid using your laptop on your lap, and consider using accessories like a cooling pad.
3) Close Unwanted Background Applications
The applications running on your laptop consume a significant amount of battery. In some cases, certain types of applications use more power than others. For instance, Google Chrome is often considered the most battery-draining browser on Windows.
There are a couple of things you can do in this situation. First, start using alternative applications to the ones you currently use that consume less battery. For instance, you can try browsers like Microsoft Edge or Arc, which are known to use less power.
In addition to this, you should also make sure that your Windows laptop isn't running any unnecessary applications. As it turns out, even if you're not actively using an application, it can slowly drain your laptop's battery by running in the background.
To ensure none of these applications are running in the background on your Windows laptop, open Task Manager and, in the Processes tab, right-click each application you don't want running. Then, select the "End Task" option.
4) Turn On Energy Saver
Windows comes with a built-in energy saver option, and it really works. You can set Windows to always use the energy saver mode or to turn it on automatically when your laptop's battery drops to a certain level. For example, configure it to activate automatically when the battery reaches 30%.
When energy saver mode is enabled, Windows limits certain background processes. For instance, Microsoft apps stop syncing in the background, other apps do not run in the background, and Windows does not download non-critical updates. The screen brightness is also reduced to 30%, although you can increase it if, like me, you also find it a bit difficult to use your laptop at that brightness level.
5) Turn Off Turbo Boost
This is the hack that literally does wonders. The function of turbo boost on your Windows laptop is to make your laptop's processors run at their maximum capacity when needed. However, when that happens, the laptop starts to consume a good amount of battery power.
That said, if you are going to use your laptop for normal tasks and are sure that there will be no need for your laptop's processor to run at its peak performance, we would advise you to turn off the boost feature. To do this, open the Registry Editor and navigate to the following location:
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\PowerSettings\54533251-82be-4824-96c1-47b60b740d00\be337238-0d82-4146-a960-4f3749d470c7
Double-click the "Attributes" value, type 0 in the Value data field, and click "OK."
Now restart your computer, then open the Start Menu. Type Edit power plan in the search field and select it from the results. Click the "Change advanced power settings" option.
Double-click the "Processor power management" option, then open the "Processor performance boost mode" setting. Choose "Disabled" for the On Battery option, and then click "Apply" and "OK" to save the changes.
You'll now notice that your laptop runs longer and heats up less than before.
It's that easy to optimize your laptop for better battery backup. However, if none of the above tips helped you, we highly recommend checking for any red flags in your laptop's battery health. If you find anything alarming, that's probably the reason your laptop isn't giving you the battery backup you're expecting. In that case, the best thing you can do is get your laptop battery replaced.
