As text messaging has become an intrinsic part of our daily lives, it has also become an increasingly popular method for cybercrime. Hackers are using text messages in a technique called Smishing. Smishing is not a new method of attack, however, it is becoming a rampant threat to businesses. Smishing is where someone attempts to gain access to confidential information by masquerading as a trustworthy entity through text messages. Don’t become the next victim. Here are three things you can do to protect your company from these types of attacks.

Number 1: Educate Employees - One of the biggest challenges business owners face when combating cybercrime, is employee awareness. Educate your staff to recognize the different warning signs that could raise suspicion of messages that include context that targets emotion or feels personalized. Text messages such as the IRS is threatening arrest or seizure, or your bank account has been locked are common examples of smishing attempts.

Number 2: Don’t Open Links – Avoid opening any links or attachments from unsolicited text messages. Hackers can easily build a website that looks like a legitimate company and ask for your personal or business information. If you have concerns regarding an account, call or go directly to the company's website and log in securely from there to decrease the likelihood of becoming a victim.

Number 3: Don't Respond – If you get a text message requesting confidential information from a number you don't recognize, it’s best to disregard it. By responding to the text, you could be letting the attacker know the number is active and possibly exposing yourself to more smishing attempts. Let your employer and IT security staff know about any attempts to get your login credentials.
