PC Power Supply Warning Signs:

YouTube Video "PC Power Supply Warning Signs"

The Power Supply Unit (PSU) in your desktop computer is the beating heart of the system. Without power your computer is a paperweight, but just like a sudden heart attack can ruin your day, a worn-out or faulty PSU can scrap your whole computer permanently.

The good news is that it doesn't have to come as a surprise. There are ways to tell if your PSU is on the way out, and of course preventative measures you can take to make a PSU death-pact an unlikely end for your computer.

Why the PSU Matters More Than You Think

One of the most important pieces of advice in PC building is "don't cheap out on the PSU". There's a tendency to buy the cheapest, no-name PSU that has the (on paper) specifications to run your computer. This is especially true when it comes to pre-built computers, where cheap PSUs are an easy way to boost profits, because the average buyer doesn't care about the PSU's brand or specs.

The problem is that some low-quality PSUs don't actually reliably provide the power they claim, and use components that won't give you good long-term service. It's also a mistake to use a PSU that offers just enough power, but no more. PSUs have a sweet spot for efficiency, noise, and temperature, which isn't at the very limit of their power delivery—so you do want some leeway.

PSUs also lose their full power delivery potential over time due to capacitor aging, which is another safety margin you need to build in. Make a mistake with your PSU choice and you might have to suffer through an unreliable computing experience, often with no clear cause, or, in the worst-case scenario, sacrifice all your expensive components to the blue smoke gods when a PSU pops and takes it all out with a nice fat surge of power.

Early Red Flags of a Dying PSU

PSU failure is often sudden and dramatic, but if you're lucky you might pick up that something's not right. There are several signs of PSU failure:

  • Weird smells of burning plastic or electronics—turn your computer off fast!
  • You get a shock when touching the PC chassis, which means that potentially your PSU is no longer grounding your PC as it should.
  • Your computer just randomly turns itself off, freezes, becomes unstable, and generally acts strangely with no clear cause.
  • Your computer takes longer than normal to power on from being completely off (not asleep). This is a sign the PSU isn't providing the necessary voltage quickly enough.
  • Your computer shuts down unexpectedly when the load increases. E.g. you start a video game and the computer turns off just as the GPU starts to draw serious power.
  • Your PSU fan doesn't spin up as it should, though be aware some models have a silent function where the fan won't spin up if the load is under a certain threshold. It should absolutely spin up under heavy load though.
  • Weird noises from inside your PSU, especially grinding from the fan, but also whining. A little coil whine under load is normal, but if you've noticed the whining start recently, or getting much louder than it used to be, or the whine is there even when idle, it could mean the PSU is on the way out.

In a sense, if you get one of these "warnings" you're lucky, because most of the time, catastrophic PSU failure happens without a heads-up.

How to Stay Safe and Prolong PSU Life

So now we get to the part where you can reduce the odds that a bad PSU causes you a world of hurt one day. As always, prevention is better than the cure, so invest in a quality PSU from a reputable brand that offers enough overhead to keep your computer safe and working for years to come.
Keep your PSU free of dust, but do not open it. Some PSUs have dust filters, but usually blowing the PSU out with an electronic air duster is sufficient. The PSU should have good ventilation and adequate airflow. Be mindful of your computer chassis choice, since that can influence this. For computers that will be standing on the floor, I'd avoid ones where the PSU sits at the bottom of the case and sucks air in from below.

Use a surge protector with your PSU, so that it doesn't take any unnecessary hits. Also, invest in a PSU tester, and use it to check your PSU once or twice a year to confirm that all the voltages and other specs look correct. You should also test any PSU you're putting into a new system, even if the PSU is brand new.

The advice most of us don't want to hear, is that you shouldn't wait until your PSU actually fails before you replace it. A good rule of thumb is to replace it every five years to be on the safe side. Though, of course, your PSU can be good for twice that amount of time, it's just about your personal appetite for risk. Testing it regularly is a good way to pinpoint the exact time to consider buying a new one.
